What is Bite Sport?

Bite sport training, often linked to IGP dog training (formerly IPO), is a structured canine sport that highlights a dog’s intelligence, obedience, and athletic ability.

This popular dog sport is divided into three key phases:

  • tracking
  • obedience
  • and protection

Each phase evaluates the dog’s unique skills and the bond between the handler and their canine companion.

The protection phase, commonly referred to as “bite work,” involves carefully controlled exercises where the dog is trained to bite a padded sleeve on command. This type of training focuses on channeling the dog’s natural drive with precision, under the handler’s guidance.

Bite sport training emphasises a stable temperament, clear communication, and trust between the dog and handler

It’s a challenging yet rewarding activity that provides essential mental stimulation and physical exercise, making it particularly well-suited for high-drive and working-line dog breeds.

Whether you’re training for IGP titles or simply looking to engage a working breed in a fulfilling activity, bite sports are an excellent choice for dog enthusiasts.

Will my dog bite people if they do bite work?

No. A common misconception is that dog bite training in working dog sports makes dogs aggressive. In reality, bite work teaches dogs that biting is a controlled “game” focused only on specific equipment, like the bite sleeve. This sport is highly context-specific; sport dogs understand this game only happens during dedicated training sessions.

They remain safe to be around the public, with no increased risk of biting during normal interactions.

To ensure bite sport safety, only confident dogs without reactive or nervous behaviors are accepted for IGP training. This ensures they bite for the enjoyment of the activity, not out of fear or aggression.

It’s crucial to understand that bite sport training is distinct from personal protection dog training, which is a different discipline entirely.

What are the training requirements?

While your dog will learn advanced obedience in this Bite Sports class, they don’t need to be perfect to start.

The most important requirement is a strong bond between you and your dog, where they are eager to work with you and respond to the commands they know.

Previous attendance in any type of training class is beneficial.

Is my dog suitable for bite sports?

The ideal candidate for bite sports has the following traits:

  • Handler Control: As an owner, you must be physically capable of restraining your dog when it is excited and pulling.
  • Temperament: Dogs must be confident and show no signs of nervousness or reactivity. They should not redirect their excitement or frustration onto their handler.
  • Breed: While all breeds are welcome, high-drive and working-line breeds typically thrive in this sport. A strong love for playing with a ball is a huge plus!
  • Comfort in Vehicle: Training involves working dogs one at a time, so your dog must be comfortable settling in your vehicle between turns.

Please note, dogs over 12 months of age will not be working at the same time, puppies under 12 months may be able to work alongside each other.

Suitability Assessment

For the safety of everyone involved, a suitability assessment is required before joining the class if your dog has not previously trained with James. This ensures the sport is a good fit for your dog’s temperament and drive.

If your dog is not yet ready, we can recommend other training to build the necessary skills for potential future participation.
