What is Bite Sport?
Bite sport training, often linked to IGP dog training (formerly IPO), is a structured canine sport that highlights a dog’s intelligence, obedience, and athletic ability.
This popular dog sport is divided into three key phases:
- tracking
- obedience
- and protection
Each phase evaluates the dog’s unique skills and the bond between the handler and their canine companion.
The protection phase, commonly referred to as “bite work,” involves carefully controlled exercises where the dog is trained to bite a padded sleeve on command. This type of training focuses on channeling the dog’s natural drive with precision, under the handler’s guidance.
Bite sport training emphasises a stable temperament, clear communication, and trust between the dog and handler

It’s a challenging yet rewarding activity that provides essential mental stimulation and physical exercise, making it particularly well-suited for high-drive and working-line dog breeds.
Whether you’re training for IGP titles or simply looking to engage a working breed in a fulfilling activity, bite sports are an excellent choice for dog enthusiasts.
What will my dog learn in class?
Your dog will develop both Advanced Obedience and Bite Work skills at a pace tailored to them. All teams begin in our Obedience – Bite Sport Class here at Dogs Country Club, Warrington where you’ll build the necessary foundation of control and engagement.
Once this foundation is established, you can move to the protection class. In these sessions, you’ll typically spend half the time on Obedience Training and the other half on Protection Work, which includes:
- Barking on command
- Building drive to bite and hold the sleeve
- Targeting only the sleeve for a clean, full bite
- Integrating obedience commands into bite work exercises
- Performing a “bark and hold” exercise
What are the benefits of bite sports?
Engaging in bite sports offers several advantages for your dog:
- Improved Physical Health: Builds excellent muscle tone and body condition
- Mental Stimulation: Provides a healthy outlet for high-drive dogs, often leading to a calmer demeanour at home
- Fulfills Breed Instincts: A genetically appropriate activity for working breeds like German Shepherds, Rottweilers, and Dobermans
- Builds Confidence and Control: Teaches your dog to remain calm and focused in high-energy or stressful situations
